Cemex in Ruedersdorf
The Ruedersdorf cement plant is an important driver of the regional economy. Hundreds of jobs, numerous apprenticeships, goods purchased in the millions. The CIMA Institute for Regional Economics has produced a study about the regional significance of Cemex at the Ruedersdorf site, which highlights the employment effects and value creation effects of the plant.
Employment effects
490 employees currently work at the Ruedersdorf site. In recent years, up to 60 trainees in 12 trainee professions have been supervised each year. Around 72 percent of employees live in the districts of Maerkisch-Oderland or Oder-Spree.
The influence of the plant on employment is reflected nationwide and regionally in the following study result: For every employee at Cemex in Ruedersdorf, there are 2.5 dependent jobs nationwide and 0.2 dependent jobs regionally. This means that in 2023, 1226 additional jobs were generated throughout Germany as a result of the cement plant’s activities
Value-added effects
Around 250 service providers and suppliers work for Cemex in the region (Maerkisch-Oderland + Oder Spree districts). Nationwide, more than 1,300 companies from Germany with a total turnover of almost 200 million euros supply the Ruedersdorf plant with goods or services.
For the evaluation year 2023, the CIMA study shows that Cemex has injected considerable financial resources into the direct economic cycle. The direct economic effects are defined through the “primary impulse” and can be quantified as follows: Regionally, Cemex has paid around 38 million euros for services, products and salaries. In terms of the turnover generated by Cemex in other sectors, energy production and manufacturing play a particularly significant role. For Germany as a whole, the direct primary impulse amounts to around 194 million euros.
In addition to the regional primary impulse, the Ruedersdorf site generates a downstream demand for services and goods with a total value of €26 million from its suppliers across all stages of the value chain, including private household consumption. The regional added value of the Ruedersdorf plant is defined by the “production value” and can be estimated at around €64 million (the sum of primary impulse € 38 m and downstream demand € 26 m). Nationwide, the economic activity of the plant generates a production value of around 328 million euros. In terms of value creation effects by sector, the manufacturing and energy sectors in particular benefit from the plant in the region in terms of running costs, while the construction sector benefits in terms of investment.
The impact of the plant on value creation nationwide is reflected in the following study result: Every euro generated by the plant will increase total production across all sectors of the German economy by a further 0.69 euros.
