Rüdersdorf, October 24, 2024 – Global building materials provider Cemex has been selected for the preparation of a funding agreement: Its CO₂ capture project “CO2LLECT” at the cement plant in Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, is set to receive financial support from the Innovation Fund.
CO2LLECT is Cemex’s largest planned Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project to date. Linde, a global leader in industrial gases and engineering, is the project’s consortium partner. As part of the project, Linde is expected to build, own, and operate a carbon capture facility, including the purification and liquefaction of captured CO₂. The goal is to capture 1.3 million tons of CO₂ annually from cement production in Rüdersdorf to fully decarbonize the site by 2030.
The advanced HISORP® CC technology by Linde will be used in Rüdersdorf, utilizing a cryogenic-adsorptive process for CO₂ capture. In this method, CO₂ is captured directly at the emission source as part of the exhaust gases. The CO₂ is then processed, purified, and liquefied to meet the purity requirements for permanent storage. In its liquid state, the CO₂ will be transported by rail to an interim storage facility and by ship to an offshore storage site in the North Sea.
The environmental performance of the Rüdersdorf CCS project will be further enhanced by the use of locally produced green electricity and recycling of water from exhaust gas condensate.
Sergio Menéndez, President of Cemex Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia, said:
“As part of our climate strategy ‘Future in Action’, we are actively driving a series of groundbreaking CCUS projects across our global operations. Cemex’s clear vision ‘Reduce before Capture’ positions CCUS as the final and most critical step toward achieving net-zero CO₂ emissions—complementing our efforts in low-carbon raw materials, alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and reducing clinker content in cement. The project in Rüdersdorf is our largest and most ambitious CCUS initiative to date and has all the necessary ingredients to make a significant contribution to decarbonizing the cement industry. We value the essential support from the EU, regulatory authorities, and trusted project partners, which enables us to accelerate and scale up the deployment of CCUS technology.”
Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke added:
“It is excellent news that the EU is supporting Cemex’s ambitious project in Rüdersdorf in collaboration with Linde. This initiative marks an important milestone on our path to a climate-neutral and sustainable industry. We will continue to support Cemex with all our capabilities. With the state government’s task force, which I launched in September, we already have the right instrument under my leadership to coordinate all necessary processes. For the cement industry, the transition to climate-neutral production is a particular challenge. Cemex has taken on this challenge in an exemplary way. I’m pleased to see early success already being achieved. The Cemex site in Rüdersdorf is one of our industrial beacons—and we will work together to ensure it remains so in the future.”
As part of its ‘Future in Action’ program, Cemex is implementing a range of high-profile new Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects across its global cement business by 2050. The technology aims to prevent CO₂ emissions from being released into the atmosphere during industrial processes by capturing the CO₂ and either repurposing or storing it.
